The No-No's of taking Medication Vacations -

As many of you are already aware, I took a medication vacation in early 2008 without the consult of my medical practitioners and without the knowledge of my family.
The results were almost catastrophically negative and there is still some residual damage, which probably will never repair until we (Medical science) finds a way to reverse the damages caused to the Central nervous System and Myelin Sheath.
Since my "error" in judgment ( my experiment ) I have preached the dangers ....

An MS Patients Update to his Medication Vacation

This segment is the fourth and final update to my Hiatus stories which began on April 3rd, 2008
There are many who write or call me asking how I am feeling or how I am doing since my vacation from my much needed MS Medication. Of course at the time of my taking my vacation there must have been great mental confusion or instability that made me question the effectiveness of the medication. So many always asking me how we know that it ( whichever of the ms meds), works or not.

And after what happened to me (read the stories in order of date, if you need to catch-up to present) and what I can attest, is that the medication does work. When asked by doctors why I did this or when it was said that I should have known better, there was no way for me to correctly answer. I guess I became the Guinea pig for all else to learn-from.
It's been almost (3) months now since my last letter concerning that exercise in stupidity (stopping the medication). Sure, many of us have taken breaks or have wanted to take breaks.

The Follow-up(2nd Story)
It now being 3 weeks since recommencing my medication, I want to again reinforce the importance of remaining on your DMD (Disease Modifying Drug). This mention, is not just for those doing MS medication but can also be told (and should be told)to anybody doing any medication for any disease, where-in a prescribed drug was designed to lessen the progression.

This message is a follow-up to my previous story.
I am writing this, because I care, to inform everybody of my actions, as foolish or thoughtless as they were at the time.
My actions, of stopping my medication, only hurt myself and I most definitely learned from it.
Never AGAIN, shall I underestimate what is wrong with me, or if my medication works.. I think this happened by reading too many other stories.
I have taken a great deal of heat from my family and friends for learning what they did, after the writing of My Hiatus.
Sure, there may be some of you: family, friends or medical personnel who felt betrayed, by my stupidity. But let's be real, I am human and I occasionally (- Yes I admit it - occasionally), make mistakes, blunders (or whatever other words you can think) of how I screwed-up.

At first I thought I deserved a break from using it. After all, it had been longer than a year (thankfully) since having a bad exacerbation. But most importantly (at the time that I began the hiatus) was that I was tired of my injection sites looking as they had been. Many of you know, the puffy and bruised looking, tender, or hardened skin reaction that can often be found from those doing sub-cutaneous injections.
How often do you, my ms peers, hear or read or know first hand of these skin reactions?
How often do you hear from a peer, who (like me) is now admitting of the temporary halt of his or her medication?

Born – January 25, 1959 in Brooklyn, NY to Barbara and Murray
Stuart grew up on Long Island where he attended Half Hollow Hills High School and also Hofstra University. Having moved to South Florida in 1980 to manage and develop the Export office for the Family Business, Mico Sewing Supplies/Mico International Corp.
In May 1984 he met Patrice who then in May 1988, they married. He has two daughters and three grandchildren
In December 1998 he learned that he had Multiple Sclerosis and soon thereafter began getting involved with the National MS Society.
In 2001 he stepped down from being able to work full time and instead attempted to work just part time while it seemed that his MS continued to progress. In 2003 he had to fully stop working and was forced to retire due to his MS. The fatigue, pain, vertigo and cognitive issues became too much to handle (and have-to-worry-about making the drive to and from) work while experiencing symptoms.
